LAS VEGAS – The sin city
Las Vegas the most populous city in Nevada, was established in 1905, and officially became a city in 1911. It is the 28th most populous city in the United States with an estimated population by the U.S. Census Bureau of 558,383 as of 2008. The primary drivers of the Las Vegas economy have been the confluence of tourism, gaming, and conventions which in turn feed the retail and dining industries. The city serves as world headquarters for the world’s two largest Fortune 500 gaming companies, Harrah’s Entertainment and MGM Mirage. Las Vegas is a popular destination for Hawaiians. It is sometimes referred to as Hawaii’s Ninth Island.
Climate
Las Vegas has an arid, desert climate. Las Vergas’s coldest month is December when the average temperature overnight is 36.6°F. In July, the warmest month, the average day time temperature rises to 104.1°F. The driest month in Las Vegas is June with 0.08 inches of precipitation, and with 0.69 inches February is the wettest month. The city enjoys abundant sunshine year-round and has an average of about 300 sunny days per year and more than 3800 hours of bright sunshine, with very little rainfall, which occurs on only 29 days per year.
Places to visit
The major attractions in Las Vegas are the casinos and the hotels. Las Vegas has nightclubs which range from chic to relaxing. The most famous hotel casinos are located on Las Vegas Boulevard on the portion of that road known as the Las Vegas Strip. Places to look out for in Las Vegas are, volcano eruption at the mirage, shows at circus circus, Bellagio fountain show and conservatory, Mystic falls park at Sam’s town, white tiger liar at the mirage, lion habitat at the MGM grand, Forum fountain shows at Caesar’s palace
Airport
Mc Carran international airport is located 5 miles (8km) south of the central business district of Las Vegas. It ranks 15th in the world for passenger traffic, with 44,074,707 passengers passing through the terminal. The airport ranks 6th in the world, for aircraft movements with 578,949 take-offs and landings. Also, various car rental facilities are available by Hertz, Dollar, AVIS, Alamo/National, Advantage, Budget, Payless, Enterprise, Savmor, and Thrifty.
Transport
Transport is easy mainly due to monorail, city buses, trolleys, shuttles etc. The trolley bus travels from The Stratosphere to the South Strip area, it does not travel to Fremont Street. The Las Vegas monorail runs from the MGM Grand Hotel to Sahara Ave. The citizens’ area transit or CAT is the Las Vegas public transit system. The 2 routes that most Las Vegas visitors will be concerned with are the #301 and #302 which both run the Strip from the south to Fremont Street.
